Carpet Beetle Treatments Manchester
Carpet Beetles
Similar to Clothes Moths and Plaster Beetles, Carpet Beetles are a textile boring insect that have become an increasing problem over the last few years. Often introduced to properties as a secondary pest problem, they can cause damage to upholstery, furniture, wool and other fabric carpets, and all kinds of garments. Once introduced to a property they can be difficult to remove entirely due to their long lifespan and life cycle, with some species living for up to 2 years.
What to look for:
The most commonly found Carpet Beetle in the UK is also the most damaging – the Varied Carpet Beetle. They are close in appearance to a Ladybird, but are covered in grey and gold scales rather than the smooth shell of a Ladybird. They are able to fly and will try to leave your property in order to mate outside. If you spot flying carpet beetles in your property it’s very possible that you will soon experience an infestation of larvae and beetles. Their eggs will often be laid in cracks and crevices in your house, safe from predators.
The larvae of the Varied Carpet Beetle are the main source of damage to your textiles as they are the ones feeding on your carpets and fabrics. They are very hard to spot due to their small size but will start feeding soon after hatching and will happily make their way all through your house in search of cupboards or drawers full of fabrics, or down onto your carpets.
Carpet Beetle Treatment & Control:
The first step is of course to contact us here at Protec Pest Control and arrange a visit from one of our highly skilled technicians. However, due to the nature of the treatment for Carpet Beetles, there are a few steps that you will need to take before we can begin:
- Hoover the affected areas.
- Remove any pets or children from the areas to be treated – this includes fish as well.
- Keep the affected areas clear of humans during the procedure and for 2 hours afterwards.
Once our technician has arrived and assessed the affected areas to determine the extent of the infestation and the type of beetle involved, they will choose the most appropriate and effective treatment to ensure that the pests are eradicated.
- A powerful insecticide will be applied to the affected areas. This will need to settle for 2
hours before anyone enters the affected areas again and will have an immediate effect on
any beetles or larvae present as well as residual effect on any other beetles that enter later. - They will also chare some tips on how to protect your home and textiles against future
infestations and can arrange follow-up visits and treatments if necessary.
Once the treatment has been completed there are few important steps for you to take:
- After the 2-hour treatment time has passed, make sure to open any windows in the area to freshen and circulate the air.
- Avoid cleaning the treated areas for at least 5 days – this will allow the insecticides residual effect to work to its fullest extent and have a greater chance of eradicating the infestation entirely.
