Identifying Rats:

The most commonly identified rat species in the UK that forms the greatest risk to your business or premises is the Brown rat. All rats are easily identifiable by their large size and hairless tails, though the less common Black Rat will be significantly smaller than the more common Brown species. Rats have excellent senses of smell, taste and hearing, and are expert climbers able to reach most areas and fit into small gaps or cracks. They are able to produce 10 to 12 litters of babies a year, and can breed from a young age. It is therefore imperative to deal with a problem quickly before population numbers escalate to out-of-control levels.

They are omnivorous and can eat pretty much anything that humans can eat or throw away. They will always try and nest close to food sources and are mainly active at night.

As well as the health risk that rats pose, they can also cause significant damage to property through their constant need to gnaw in order to control the growth of their teeth. They will chew on cables, exposed brickwork, woodwork or pipes and have been known to cause fires or flooding due to the gnawing actions. Any signs of a rat infestation can have a disastrous effect on a business’s reputation.

Identifying Mice:

While there are several species of mice in the UK, only two are considered to be a true problem pest – the House and the Field Mouse. Of these two types, the House Mouse poses the greater issue to urban premises and is more likely to be found causing problems.

The House Mouse is significantly smaller than a rat and will be light grey or brown in colour. The tail will often be furred and is normally the same length as the body of the mouse itself. Like rats, they are excellent climbers and prolific breeders and can be found in a wide variety of urban premises. They will usually create nests using fabric or material that they can strip away, and damage to furnishings, clothes or fabrics in storage is often one of the early signs of a mouse problem.

While they do prefer cereals and grains, mice are not fussy eaters and are capable of digesting the majority of human foodstuffs. They are very dependent on humans not only for sources of stored food, but also for the shelter and warmth that our buildings can provide.

The Field Mouse will usually be the main source of rodent problems for rural premises such as farms or storage areas – in high numbers they can cause significant damage to crops and property and can breed as quickly as their urban cousins. Field Mice are usually a sandy brown in colour and will have noticeably larger eyes.

In both cases, the risk to health is the same as with a rat infestation – mice can carry similar diseases and parasites, and will spread their urine and faeces as they move around. Similarly, they also need to gnaw and can cause the same damage to property as rats can.

Controlling The Problem:

Prevention is key and we would always recommend taking the following actions;

• Eliminate potential entry points (e.g. gaps in doors, floor vents).
• Keep outside areas clean and tidy.
• Ensure drains are properly covered and in a good state of repair.
• Keep bins covered at all times. Use wheelie bins rather than plastic bags.
• If you feed garden birds make sure this is done in such a way as food is not left scattered and might attract rats or mice
