What to look for
- There are 24 bumblebee species in the UK.
- In spring, queens emerge from hibernation and look for nest sites; a well-established nest can contain up to 400 bumblebees.
- Bumblebee nests usually last between two and six months and do not cause structural damage to buildings.
- Female bumblebees usually sting only defensively when threatened, while males have no sting; a nest near a busy entrance can therefore prompt a request for identification advice.
