What to look for
- Mealworm larvae are yellowish to brown, smooth and shiny with a worm-like body; the emerging adult is a black beetle.
- They can be found in moist grain in dark, undisturbed areas, with waste, dusty or damp areas providing favourable conditions.
- They feed on cereal products used in homes, although a typical household setting may not meet all of their needs.
- Mealworm outbreaks usually occur where grain is processed and stored, so recurring mealworms around food or feed materials can warrant identifying the associated source.
