Manchester Wasp Control
Manchester Pest Control – Wasp Nest Treatment. Wasps can be a common problem across Manchester, Stockport and the Cheshire area, and there are several different methods of treatment depending on the type of wasp problem that you are currently facing. In our experience there are three main types of wasp problem that you could encounter: 1. An active wasp nest on your property. 2. Hibernating queen wasps waking too early. 3. Individual nuisance wasps (where the nest cannot be found). Here at Manchester Pest Control, we have the experience, techniques and treatments to deal with any sort of wasp problem – all you need to do is contact us here on our website www.protecpestcontrol.co.uk or via telephone on 0161 448 1782 to arrange a visit from one of our technicians. So, let’s take a look at each of the types of wasp problems that you could be facing. 1. You need to get rid of wasps and have an active wasp nest on your property. Right away, the safest and most sensible thing to do is to contact us here at Manchester Pest Control and have the nest treated by our professional and highly trained technicians. The treatment of wasp nests is a fairly straightforward once the nest has been located, and our technicians will be more than happy to discuss the various methods that they can employ on your behalf. More often than not, our technician will recommend the use of “professional use insecticides” alongside specialist application equipment. These insecticides and treatments are not available to the general public and our technicians have to undergo specialist training in the proper use and application of such chemicals. In most circumstances the easiest and most effective treatment is an insecticide dust that is pumped into the nest or the opening in a wall or roof where the wasps are gaining entry to the nest. As the wasps arrive back at the nest they walk through this dust, becoming contaminated and carrying it further into the nest. The dust takes some minutes to affect the individual wasps, ensuring that they have time to contaminate the whole nest area before they die. As more wasps arrive back at the nest, more dust will be taken into the nest and the effect of the insecticide becomes greater. Using this treatment method, the majority of the wasps will die off within a couple of hours and the whole nest is usually dead within 48 hours once all of the wasps have returned to the nest. Our technicians will arrange a return visit with you once the dust has been applied, in order to check that the population of the nest has been entirely killed and then to affect the actual removal of the now-safe nest. An alternative approach is what is known as a “quick knock down” insecticide – these are usually aerosol type foam applications which come in a can. Foam type applications react quicker than the dust type insecticides and are generally used when a nest needs to be removed straight away for safety reasons, for example if the nest is present in a hospital, nursery or other area where vulnerable people can be. While these foams are effective in regards to killing all wasps present immediately and rendering the nest safe straight away, they do have their drawbacks. The nest needs to be visible and accessible in order to directly apply the foam, and if the nest has to be removed straight away, any wasps that are not in the nest at the time of application will not be killed. Remember, each of our technicians will make an assessment of the best treatment type for your nest problem and consult with you before any action is actually taken. Contact us as soon as you notice any potential nests on 0161 448 1782 or via our website – we cover anywhere in the Manchester, Stockport or Cheshire areas. 2. You have queen wasps in your house in winter Due to climate changes leading to longer and hotter summers and springs, as well as unseasonable warm periods, we are finding more people are contacting us to report that large wasps (often queens) are finding their ways into properties. This problem arises when the ambient temperature rises above 7°c for any significant amount of time. Queens which have woken up due to the increase in temperature can find their way indoors via holes or cracks and are also attracted by any light sources. Queens generally hibernate in loft spaces as the temperature remains stable and it is dark. As there is no nest to worry about at this time due to the recently awoken Queen not having had time to build one, treatment is usually a lot simpler than dealing with a fully developed nest. Our technicians will usually employ a fogging machine which sprays a liquid insecticide into the areas that Queens have been found. The liquid is dispersed as a very fine mist and will treat the entire loft area and is the most efficient way of killing the Queen before she can establish a hive. It’s also the quickest way to kill a single wasp that otherwise may be very difficult to locate in an attic or room. 3. You need to get rid of wasps but cannot find the nest. If you are experiencing a problem with lots of individual wasps but are unable to locate a nest anywhere on your property, then chances are the nest is close by on a neighbouring property or woodland area. If your neighbour had a wasp nest on their property and they refused to have it destroyed, to protect your own property and well-being we need to get control over the wasp population from the problem nest. We cannot destroy the nest and we cannot kill all the wasps, but we can control where they feed. These nests will send out scouts looking for food, and it’s these scouts that you will be encountering. Once they have found a food source, the scouts will return to their nest laying a pheromone trail that other wasps can follow to the food. The trick then, is to deal effectively with the scouts to stop them returning to the nest in the first place. Wasp traps are easily available from most hardware stores; however, these are not always the most efficient traps and will not kill the majority of the wasps that they attract. The reason most wasp traps don’t work is precisely because they don’t kill many of the wasps they attract, thereby allowing the scouts to return to the nest and lead other wasps back to the trap and the surrounding area. These low efficiency traps are sadly not very effective in stopping wasps from returning to your property time and time again. Contact us here at Manchester Pest Control and our technicians can employ high efficiency wasp traps that will catch every wasp that enters the trap. These scout wasps are therefore never able to return to the nest and lead others back, and therefore no further wasps will visit your property. Please note that these traps are not available for public purchase and that their placement and use should only be done by our highly trained technicians. DIY wasp nest removal Every year home owners who find a wasp nest on their property ask themselves the question “Should I treat a wasp nest myself?”. While it can be tempting to try and deal with the nest yourself using one of the many products available from DIY stores and garden centres that claim to get rid of your wasps, it is not a decision that should be taken lightly and can be dangerous if not done properly. Many of these products come with little or no instructions and very often the successful treatment of a wasp or hornet nest depends on training, experience and having the right tools for the job. The technicians here at Manchester Pest Control are highly trained and fully licensed to use professional wasp treatment products that are unavailable to the public. Wasps are naturally defensive of their nests and will sting anyone or anything (often without provocation) just for walking near to the nest. Wasp stings are not only painful but also potentially carry a risk from infection due to the exposure to parasites and other unsanitary things that wasps may encounter while they are hunting for food themselves. Wasps are also able to sting repeatedly, unlike most bees who can only sting once before dying. It’s not uncommon for the entire population of a nest to swarm and aggressively sting people who have tried to deal with a nest. Without the right safety equipment or approach, this can be a very dangerous situation to be in. Wasps are notorious for “following” – this means that if they decide to attack, they can and do follow you, even if you run away. We are often called after a customer has attempted to destroy the nest themselves but have been overwhelmed by wasps becoming defensive. If you suffer with any allergies then you should be very careful to avoid being stung not only by wasps but by any stinging insect. However, wasp and bee stings can be potentially life threatening. Particular thought should be given to nests that are in roof spaces or in areas that require a ladder to access as this can increase the risk of injury and damage to property in the event of a swarm attack r accident. Under no circumstances should you ever attempt any of the following: •Do not block the entrance to wasp nest: they will find another way out and can end up swarming inside your property. •Do not use expanding foam to try and kill a wasp nest: it won’t work and you will just make matters worse. •Do not try and set fire to a wasp nest or blow it up with fireworks. For any of your wasp concerns, the best thing to do is to contact Manchester Pest Control as soon as possible via our website or on 0161 448 1782. We cover the entirety of the Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire areas and our technicians are available 7 days a week.
